Drought resistance detection, hydrological basins, and topographic risks of the Motagua River in Guatemala

Lux Sigma, using the Copernicus European Earth observation program, has developed four use cases about the Motagua River published on the Copernicus site. Also forestry relationship with temperature for ESRI/ArcGIS in Florida, USA, risk of landslides and droughts in latin america for Spanish Cooperation Office and conference in Philadelphia, USA in June, 2025. Including the use of QFIELD and QGIS to complement the satellite data. Here are the published case studies:
1) How CLMS products show the impact of deforestation on the Motagua River life
Link to Copernicus: Link to Copernicus Land Service
2) Mangrove resistance to water contamination and plastic in the Motagua River in the Caribbean Sea of Guatemala Link to Copernicus Marine Services
3) GUATEMALA - URBAN PLANNING in river recharge regions of Chiquimula and Peten. This research shows the strategic position of Chiquimula, Guatemala to protect the highlands of Esquipulas and Trifinio rainy forest as hydrological recharge region for Rio Grande and Motagua River and as the birthplace of Rio Lempa that gives water source for El Salvador. Link to Copernicus Use case about Chiquimula
4) COFFEE, BIODIVERSITY AND HEALTH. IMPACT OF EL NINO 2014/2015 IN COFFEE PLANTATIONS This research probes the impact of El Nino drought during years 2014 and 2015 to the guatemalan coffee plantations. Link to Copernicus Land Service about droughts and coffee
5) Fifty years of reforestation in the eastern United States probably created a cool barrier to extreme heat
The ESRI/ArcGIS scientific community published my research on the possible relationship between low temperatures and reforestation 50 years ago in Florida, USA. As another test, I used coffee reforestation in the Chiquimula dry corridor and low soil temperatures. Perhaps planting trees with endemic species helps reduce heat and increase soil moisture.

6)Research for the Spanish National Geographic Information Center and the Spanish Cooperation Agency Measure the risks of extreme weather, landslides, and urban and rural temperatures due to forest cover loss using Copernicus and Sentinel. The risks include utility infrastructure, including electricity in Europe. The study covers Spain, Guatemala, Bolivia, and Mexico. Guatemala: Quiché, the Motagua River, Sayaxché and southern Petén, Chiquimula, Huehuetenango coffee, and fires in Santa Eulalia, Huehuetenango. 8) Analysis of landslide risk due to forest loss in the Volcan de Agua after the earthquakes that affected Guatemala on July 8th. 2025. The article was published in the major newspaper of Guatemala, Prensa Libre in this link: Earthquake July 8th. 2025 risk analysis

Training for technical teams of fourteen local governments along Motagua river in Guatemla Lux Sigma has trained local authorities of fourteen provinces along the Motagua River in Guatemala in topics about "Drought resistance detection, hydrological basins, and topographic risks of the Motagua River in Guatemala" using QGIS and QFIELD. Each territory has it's own basin analysis and the technical teams identified the regions under their administration that could benefit for a reforestation. You can see the video tutorials of these courses below.

2) Chimaltenango, cabeceraStrategic part of Guatemala because it is the hydrological recharge for rivers that feed the Motagua, birthplace of Coyolate river that gives water to Antigua Guatemala and birthplace of Xaya Pixcaya basin that gives the water to Guatemala city of almost four millions of habitants.
